The apparatus operates by applying an AC test voltage between two platinum electrodes placed on the surface of a test specimen at a specified spacing. A standard electrolyte solution (ammonium chloride) is allowed to drip at controlled intervals onto the specimen surface. The voltage is gradually increased until tracking failure occurs, defined by sustained arcing or surface breakdown. The highest voltage at which the material withstands 50 drops without tracking is recorded as the CTI value
